Does My Water Feature Need to Be Cleaned?
There are many factors to consider in answering this question.

  • How long has it been?
  • Do you get a lot of leaves and decaying organic debris in your water feature?
  • Do you have fish and do you feed them? What type of fish food do you feed them?
  • Do you use quality (not purchased at a box store) water treatments regularly?
  • Do you have a lot of string algae?
  • Is there a build-up of debris on the pond bottom?
  • Is the feature a pond or pond-free? Pond-frees usually only need cleaning every 4-5 years.
  • Has the water been clear or cloudy or debris-filled?
  • What is your personal tolerance of the look and condition of your pond?

If it has been a long time, you feed your fish, there is a lot of debris in the water or the water is not clear and you think it looks dirty... then yes, you need to clean your pond.

How much will it cost to have Cool Ponds clean my pond?
We cannot give you an estimate prior to the cleaning because we just don't know what we're getting into until we are physically in the pond. We charge by the hour. An average sized pond that is maintained well and cleaned regularly will usually range from $300-$500. You can certainly give us a maximum amount you want to spend and we will be as efficient as we can and stay within your budget leaving some of the work for you if necessary.

Is it necessary to completely drain the pond for a cleaning?
YES!!! Please don't let anyone tell you otherwise. If the sludge in the bottom is not removed, it's not a cleaning and you are wasting time and money. The sludge causes all the maintenance issues. If done properly, and carefully, there is no stress or harm that will come to your fish. Actually they will be quite happy when the cleaning is finished!

When is the best time to clean my pond?
The best time for the health of your fish and your ecosystem is when the water temperature is 55 degrees or less. But if that's not possible, it's ok to clean when it's warmer just NOT in the heat of summer.

Do you use a pressure washer?
We NEVER use a pressure washer during pond cleanings. We do use a high pressure hose nozzle. There is such a thing as cleaning a pond too well! You work so hard to build your ecosystem, why totally destroy it? We will remove the stringy algae from all the surfaces, but there should still be a green coating.

How do you remove the debris on the bottom? Do you remove the rock too?
We are very experienced and adept at removing debris in the pond bottom. We will be able to move rock around but not remove it from the pond in order to get the debris out.

How and when should I schedule a pond cleaning?
Most people schedule their pond cleanings with us in January for cleanings March through May, but anytime is fine. Email us and ask for a "Cleaning Request Form" or stop in our store. You can also stop by our store or visit our Classes page to find upcoming seminars. We're also happy to teach you how to do your own maintenance.
